Auxiliary Scholarships Offered to High School Seniors

Naeve Hospital Auxiliary will award three $750 scholarships to graduating high school seniors in the Mayo Clinic Health System Albert Lea service area that have selected the medical field as their chosen vocation.

All scholarships are provided on the basis of academic ability, leadership, commitment and character.

Complete scholarship information and applications are available from counselors in area high schools or at the medical center.

Applications should be returned to Kathy Leidal, Community Relations, Mayo Clinic Health System, 404 W. Fountain St., Albert Lea, MN  56007 by March 14, 2012.

Applications will be reviewed by the Naeve Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Committee. Those receiving scholarships will be notified in late April.

The City Of Albert Lea Is Hiring

The City of Albert Lea is looking to fill two full time positions.  Both of these positions have application deadlines in the month of February.

The first position is for a Civil/Environmental Engineer.  That person will design a wide range of municipal improvements including streets, sanitary sewers, water main, storm sewers, wastewater and treatment plant improvement projects and other improvement projects.

A Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited 4 year college/university is preferred.

Salary range: $54,494.75 to $70,859.98

Albert Lea State of the City Address

Albert Lea Mayor and City Manager presented the State of the City Address Thursday afternoon.

The Mayor and City Manager talked about highlights of the past year, including the hiring of Chad Adams as City Manager, talk about the Broadway Ridge Renewal Fund from a loan to a grant, the distribution Economic Development Revolving loans, passing an amendment to the sign ordinance and being designated a Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Community, among others.

Adams then talked about the 2012 budget and discussed projects and goals for the year.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar To Visit Albert Lea

Sen. Amy Klobuchar To Visit Albert Lea

Senator Amy Klobuchar will include a stop in Albert Lea on Friday.

She is beginning the day in Rochester with visits to the Lincoln K-8 Choice School and to Mayo Clinic for their "Go Red For Women" event.

In the afternoon, Sen. Klobuchar will travel to Austin and then to Albert Lea to tour two different businesses.

Search Begins For Farm Family Of The Year

The Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce is now accepting applications for the Farm Family of the Year. 

Selection Criteria include:


1. Full-time farmer (majority of income must come from farming).
2. Farmed at least 5 years.
3. Have some involvement in the community organizations.
4. Not previously been an award recipient.
5. Able to attend recognition program in August at Farmfest and participate in Freeborn County farm family recognition in March.

The Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee and the University of Minnesota Extension Service sponsor this award. 

Applications will be accepted until February 3, 2012.  They can be picked up at the Chamber Office in the Northbridge Mall, the Freeborn County Extension Office, or downloaded at www.albertlea.org/farm.pdf

Albert Lea Unemployment Lowest Since Oct. 2008

The unemployment rate in Albert Lea is at the lowest level it has been since October 2008, according to the latest numbers from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.

The rate for December 2011 is at 7 percent.  The unemployment rate was 6.3 percent in October 2008.  One year ago it was at 8.6 percent.

According to DEED, 617 people were looking for work in Albert Lea in December.  The labor stood at more than 8,800 people.

Unemployment rates of surrounding communities in December 2011:

  • Austin:  5.3%
  • Owatonna:  6%
  • Rochester:  4.5%
  • Fairmont:  5.4%
