Many Rural Post Offices to Stay Open

Good news for hundreds of rural Post Offices.

The United States Postal Services says they'll stay open but with shorter hours.

As many 3,700 low revenue post offices had been set to close next week.

That includes this post office in hope, though it's still not clear which post offices will stay open.

The Postmaster General says the new plan will save the agency a half a billion dollars a year.

Albert Lea Soldiers Returning Home Friday

Albert Lea Soldiers Returning Home Friday

The National Guard has confirmed that Albert Lea's Delta Company 2-135IN is returning on Friday, May 4th 2012. The soldiers are scheduled to arrive at the Albert Lea Armory sometime between 11 am and 1 pm.

The return ceremony will be open to the public. But out of consideration for the families and their soldiers, the National Guard is requesting that the public, if attending, would stand towards the back of the Armory Gym.

The guard says it is not able to bring the soldiers through town like in the past. However, if people would like to stand along the route to greet the bus, officials recommend standing along Prospect Avenue.

If you can't make it, be sure to watch ABC 6 News at 5, 6 and 10 pm.

National Screen Free Week

Children these days are spending more time with "screens" than in any activity other than sleep, this might be the week to change that.

This week is national "Screen Free Week".

The idea is to reduce the amount of time your kids are spending with screens computers, tv and video games.

Studies show that pre-schoolers are now spending an average of 32 hours each week, staring into some kind of screen.

Excessive screen time has been linked to a number of problems for children, including obesity and poor school performance.

Families are encouraged to reduce "screen time" and spent more time on activities like reading and outside time.

Venem Family Benefit

Please join us!  Venem Family Benefit for Jaeger Venem, Saturday April 28, 2012 at Pub 69 in Twin Lakes, MN, Noon - 1:00am.

In December, 6-year-old Jaeger Venem was diagnosed with epilepsy.  He had been having numerous petit absence seizures on a daily basis.  After the seizures were not responding to medications, we began looking for the cause of the seizures, which is when in March they found the tumor.  There are two areas on the brain which are causing concern.  They will remove part of the tumor as they are not able to get at all of it.  They may also remove another section of the brain that was injured sometime after his birth, typical for premature babies.  Surgery will be done in 2 phases.  The two procedures will be done within a couple days of each other.  Jaeger will begin recovery in the hospital for about 7 days, after that he will be recovering at home for the next 6 weeks.  Jaeger Venem's family would like to t

A Reason to Run: Tackling my First Hill Run

Journal of a Distance Runner (Thursday April 26th 2012)

Hill Runs:

Have you ever tried to run up a hill? It’s not as easy as it looks.

At first, you think, “yeah, I can totally do this.”

After a few feet, you suddenly realize how steep you’re actually climbing.

I was surprised last week when my trainer told me to not only run up a 600 meter hill, but do it 7 times.

Let me tell you one things about hill runs, they stink.

They’re terrible.

But everyone tells me their worth it.

At first I thought, “you guys are crazy. No way in heck can this be worth it.”

I soon realized how beneficial they can be.

Just a few days ago I was handed a map of the marathon route.

On race day I’m set to encounter a handful of nasty looking monoliths of destruction.

My knees are trembling already.
