Heaviest Snow for Some in Over Two Years!

Here's some of the snow reports passed along from the National Weather Service. A couple of communities had an array of widely ranging totals from viewers about 6-9 1/2" range(Albert Lea, Mantorville, Owatonna) In those instances, the average or co-op observation is shown.

Most places fell in the 6-8" range but some communites rounded out the lower end of our expected range at 4-6". Some isolated spots eclipsed 8".

For some, it was the highest amounts seen in years.  Officially at Rochester International Airport, 7.2" of snow fell with this storm, the highest amount from any one storm since 16" fell on December 10th & 11th, 2010.

Utilities Celebrate Energy Awareness Month

Utilities Celebrate Energy Awareness Month

It’s October 1st and the beginning of Energy Awareness Month.

October is typically when we start using less electricity on air conditioning and kick on our heaters.

Energy experts say it's the perfect time to go through your home and check thermostats, insulation, high energy appliances, and your heater.

By doing these few things we use less energy which not only benefits us right away, but it helps utilities keep their rates low.

"We do have incentives from the state to do conservation as well and to promote that with our members. With the cooperative we want our members to be able to afford their energy use and being energy conscious and energy efficient is one of the ways to do that,” People’s Cooperative Services Director of Engineering Gary Fitterer says.

The Shell Rock River Watershed District Makes Big Investment

(ABC 6 News) - The Shell Rock River Watershed District is moving forward with its Water Management Plan.

The district purchased a 51-foot hydraulic dredge at a Ritchie Brothers auction in Owatonna. The dredge will be used to remove sediment from Fountain and Albert Lea Lakes. The dredge, along with pumps, piping and other necessary equipment cost $340,000.

According to Board Chair Clayton Petersen, “The availability of this dredge so close to home and at a value was certainly a unique opportunity we felt compelled to pursue.”

“Now that we have a dredge, we have made a clear statement that we are starting the next step – sediment removal and lake restoration," says District Administrator Brett Behnke. "While this process will continue to take a long time, we are thrilled to have taken this huge step in that direction.”

No Burning Permits Issued In Freeborn County

No Burning Permits Issued In Freeborn County

Extremely dry conditions combined with high winds forecast for Thursday have prompted the suspension of all permitted burning within Freeborn County.

This is effective immediately and will be in place until further notice.  No burning by permit will be allowed in Freeborn County until then.

This is not a burn ban.  Recreational fires and people who want to grill are still allowed to do so.  The suspension applies only to those fires that are larger than recreational fires and for which a permit is required.

Any person wishing to burn by permit must, by law, notify law enforcement of their intentions.  Those people who contact the Law Enforcement Center will be told that issuing burning by permit has been suspended.  People who still burn, even after being told not to, are in violation of Minnesota's open burning laws and may be ticketed.
