Albert Lea Hometown Pride Clean-Up Day Set

The Albert Lea City Council decided this week that the Hometown Pride Clean-Up Day for residents will be held from 9am-12pm on Saturday, April 28.

It will take place at the City of Albert Lea Transfer Station and Demolition Landfill.

The Clean-Up Day provides the opportunity to dispose of most items free of charge, or at reduced rates on certain items.

Neither hazardous waste nor commercial garbage will be accepted. Proof of city residence will be required.

The reduced rates on Clean-Up Day from 9am-12pm will be:

  • Free brush/yard waste
  • Free Household Garbage
  • Free Demolition Debris
  • $10.00 per Appliance/Sofa Beds
  • $5.00   per Furniture Piece
  • $3.00   per Car or Pick-up Tire
  • Regular Rates on rims, & e-waste


The City thanks Waste Management for their generous contribution toward the Hometown Pride Clean-Up Day.

Give Your Input On The Albert Lea Streetscape Project

Interested in the future of Broadway Avenue? There will be an informational open house on Thursday night.

The Broadway Streetscape Project  includes new sidewalks along with street and decorative lighting from Front Street on the north end of town to Fountain Street on the south.  It also includes a renovation of the park at Fountain Lake.
   
The current cost is 7.4 miilion dollars so the city says it will need to find grants before a project schedule is set.
    
They are looking for the council to approve the project this Spring.

High Fire Danger, Burn Permits Suspended

     There's an elevated fire risk for much of Minnesota.  Red Flag warnings are in place for much of south Minnesota and northwest Iowa
     It's blamed on low humidity and high winds.  Winds will be breezy for the next couple days with gusts towards 35 mph.
     Any burning outside of a recreational camp fire is strongly discouraged and with any burning, extreme care will be needed.

Albert Lea's "The Big Freeze" This Weekend

The Big Freeze will be held in Albert Lea this upcoming weekend.  The location is different this year than it was last year.

There will be a chili cook-off, skydiving, a Take A Kid Ice Fishing competition, geocaching, a softball tournament, snowshoe shuffle, winter carnival, Disc Golf Ice Bowl, snowmobile radar runs, sleigh rides, the Polar Plunge and more!

Freeborn-Mower Cooperative Services Sponsors Essay Competition

Freeborn-Mower Cooperative Services’ (FMCS) Fifth Annual Youth Tour Competition is in full swing, attracting participation from 11th graders living in the FMCS service territory.

 

Eligible students from area schools lying within the FMCS service territory are invited to write a 500 word essay on this topic.  Freeborn-Mower Cooperative Services is celebrating 75 years in business.  If you could go back in time, describe the role you would have liked to play in our cooperative’s history and why.  Also, provide an example of what you would do to shape our energy future.  A panel of outside judges has been selected and will review the essays and completed application forms.

Warming Houses Close For Season In Albert Lea

The Albert Lea Park and Rec Department says that warming houses will be closed for the season due to warm weather temperatures.

Their openings were delayed several times over the last couple of months.  They finally opened for just 10 days in January.

Park and Rec is hoping for a better winter for warming houses next year.
