Albert Lea Public Library To Celebrate Dr. Seuss

The Albert Lea Public Library invites kids and families to join them for fun to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday on Thursday, March 1.

The celebration will include crafts, games and fun!  It will be held from 2-4pm.

The event is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

Council To Consider Expansion Of Disc Golf Course

At their regular meeting on Monday night, the Albert Lea City Council will be asked to approve an expansion at Bancroft Bay Disc Golf Course.

Tim Engstrom and Ross Brandt from the local Disc Golf Club will be present to discuss their proposal to expand the current nine-hole disc golf course located in the upper part of Bancroft Bay Park to eighteen holes.  

They presented their proposal at the February 20th Park and Recreation Advisory Board meeting.  The Board voted to support the proposal.  

They would like to start fundraising efforts and hopefully complete the project by early summer.

Freeborn-Mower Cooperative Services Sponsors Essay Competition

Freeborn-Mower Cooperative Services’ (FMCS) Fifth Annual Youth Tour Competition is in full swing, attracting participation from 11th graders living in the FMCS service territory.

 

Eligible students from area schools lying within the FMCS service territory are invited to write a 500 word essay on this topic.  Freeborn-Mower Cooperative Services is celebrating 75 years in business.  If you could go back in time, describe the role you would have liked to play in our cooperative’s history and why.  Also, provide an example of what you would do to shape our energy future.  A panel of outside judges has been selected and will review the essays and completed application forms.

Warming Houses Close For Season In Albert Lea

The Albert Lea Park and Rec Department says that warming houses will be closed for the season due to warm weather temperatures.

Their openings were delayed several times over the last couple of months.  They finally opened for just 10 days in January.

Park and Rec is hoping for a better winter for warming houses next year.

Sidewalk Closed In Albert Lea 2-6 Weeks

The City of Albert Lea says that a sidewalk will be closed for 2 to 6 weeks.

It is located on the west side of Newton from College Street to Front.  It will be closed because of construction.  Pedestrians are asked to use the east walk.

Gourmet Auction For Big Island Rendezvous

Gourmet Auction For Big Island Rendezvous

This year's Gourmet Auction to benefit the 2012 Big Island Rendezvous and Festival and other projects funded by the Albert Lea-Freeborn County Chamber of Commerce is coming up.

Funds raised at the auction will go towards bringing in re-enactors for students to experience, reduced entrance fees, scholarships, and trip funding grants for classes that would otherwise be unable to experience Education Days.

There will be an array of items on which to bid, as well as lots of great food to sample and savor.

Warming Houses In Albert Lea Still Won't Open

Warming Houses in Albert Lea remain closed.  They were supposed to open on December 22nd, but warm temperatures and equipment issues prevented that from happening.

 

Albert Lea Parks & Rec had hoped to open them on January 7th, but since the weather has been so mild, they will remain closed.
